Stromboli is one of those foods that most people would never even think to make at home. While it can be quite involved, it doesn’t have to be, and this recipe proves it! Using pre-made dough and pre-sliced meats and cheese, it takes only about 10-20 minutes to prepare your Stromboli for the oven. And while a little egg brushed on the top can be skipped when short on time, I wouldn’t recommend it. That small extra step allows the top of the dough to brown, making it visually appealing, and adds just a little crunch as well.

Some people will baulk at the idea of using provolone cheese in Stromboli. Traditionally, it contains mozzarella cheese. However, my family has used provolone for years to make many of our Italian-inspired dishes, like pizza, Italian sandwiches, and yes, Stromboli. Mozzarella is a softer cheese and, as a result, has a much milder taste than provolone, which is aged a little longer. In my house, we prefer strong flavors in most dishes, and so provolone it is! However, mozzarella can easily be substituted with little difference in outcome.

While my family uses ham, pepperoni, and salami in this easy pizza Stromboli recipe, you can use almost any type of filling you prefer. Sausage, banana peppers, onion, bacon, mushrooms, or green peppers will all change the flavor according to your preferences. Really, any topping you can put on pizza, you can add to this recipe. Maybe even pineapple! But, I will leave that debate for another day.

Admittedly, this isn’t the healthiest recipe. I generally try to avoid processed foods, like pre-made dough and cured meats. Both add quite a lot of sodium to this dish, as well as fat. But, I’m also a believer in moderation. Especially with active children in the home, it’s nearly impossible to eat healthy every meal, and pairing this with a healthy salad on the side helps to balance the large amounts of fat and sodium in the overall meal. Besides, who would want to avoid Stromboli? It’s delicious!

This is a large recipe. It can easily be cut in half for smaller families or appetites. For my family of 4, one Stromboli just isn’t enough, but 2 is more than we can eat in one sitting. Luckily, this tastes wonderful leftover. My kids will even eat it cold when packed for their school lunch.

Easy Pizza Stromboli Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 loaves French bread dough
  • 1 package sliced deli ham (about 9 ounces)
  • 8 ounces sliced hard salami
  • 1 package pepperoni slices (about 5 ounces)
  • 2 packages sliced Provolone cheese (8 ounces each)
  • 1 large egg
  • Pizza sauce, for serving

Directions

  1. On a 12 x 12 inch greased baking sheet (or larger), unroll the french bread dough, and spread it out to fill almost the entire pan. If needed, unroll the second bread dough on a separate baking sheet or a cutting board
  2. Place a layer of deli ham over the dough, dividing the meat evenly between the two unrolled loaves. Cover the majority of the dough as evenly as possible, staying about 1/2 inch away from all sides
  3. Repeat step #2 with the cheese, pepperoni, and salami.
  4. Starting at the side facing you, gently fold a small amount of dough over the meat and cheese layers, then carefully roll up the Stromboli, rolling away from you. Take any dough from the ends and pinch them closed. If any meat or cheese is sticking out at the seam, gently stretch some dough over top the seam and pinch it closed
  5. Place both Strombolis on a greased baking pan, seam side down.
  6. Crack open the egg in a small dish, and with a basting brush, break the yolk and stir until the yolk and white are mostly mixed.
  7. Gently brush the top of each Stromboli with the egg, making sure to cover every part of the dough that is reachable without picking up the Stromboli.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 350oF for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden brown
  9. Cut into 1-2 inch slices and serve with pizza sauce for dipping.

Time Saving Tip: Follow steps 1-7, then cover tightly with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours. When ready to bake, simply uncover and follow steps 8 and 9.
