Tacos are such a fabulous food item! They are fast to prepare, kid-friendly, and delightful to eat. Yet, many of us continue to spend extra money at the grocery store, usually a few extra dollars each trip, on seasoning packets for a taco dinner. While a few dollars may not seem like much, over time this amount certainly adds up! Many of us already have the ingredients to season our own tacos on hand and it’s just a matter of getting the right mix of flavors.

This homemade taco seasoning recipe is a savory and delicious way to season your taco meat and is far less expensive over time than purchasing pre-packaged seasoning blends. Garlic, cumin, chili, and onion flavors combine with oregano and paprika for a yummy taco night every time! The best part? Because you are making your own seasoning blend, it’s customizable. Love garlic? Add extra! Not a fan of oregano in your tacos? Just omit it from the recipe. Even some heat can be added with a little crushed red pepper or cayenne pepper mixed in.

As with most of my recipes, you may be wondering why salt is not included in this recipe. As a dietitian, I very rarely use salt in any of my recipes, to help keep my family’s dinners on the healthier side. While you can certainly add some salt to this homemade taco seasoning recipe (as much as you like), it tastes incredible without it. I would encourage you to try this recipe first without salt before automatically adding it to your food.

What type of meat does this go well with? Any type of ground meat. I use this homemade taco seasoning recipe with ground beef, ground turkey, and ground chicken, and all are delicious. I have found, however, that I like a little more seasoning with my chicken and turkey tacos. If you are making this in bulk, about 1-2 Tablespoons of seasoning will flavor each pound of ground meat. Store in an air-tight container in a cool, dark place.
