Nothing says comfort food like tender chunks of beef in a rich, savory gravy. Served over noodles or mashed potatoes, and you can’t go wrong! This easy beef and gravy recipe is no exception. Using mostly pre-packaged ingredients makes prep work fast and easy to save time on busy weeknights. Mixing in a little garlic and some mushrooms adds an extra-savory flavor and will make this easy beef and gravy recipe a go-to in your dinner rotation.

Although I prefer to buy Tri-Tip steaks for this dish, almost any cut of beef will do. Top sirloin or sirloin tip steaks will work quite well in this recipe, and may result in beef that is a little more tender. Flank and skirt steaks can also be used. Wanting to make this without slicing the beef yourself? Use store-bought stew meat that is already cut for you!

This easy beef and gravy recipe uses only 6 ounces of beef broth because that results in the consistency of gravy that my family prefers. Yet, each family has different preferences when it comes to the thickness of the sauces and gravies for their food. For a thicker sauce, use less broth, perhaps only 4 ounces. For a thinner, runnier gravy, using 8 ounces of broth (or even more!) will work. Keep in mind, though, that this sauce will seem thicker while mixing, and will thin slightly during the cooking process. I like to mix in beef broth a little at a time until the gravy is just a little thicker than I like. By the time it is done cooking, it is usually the perfect consistency.

Personally, I don’t really care for mushrooms. I have made this recipe many times without them, and it tastes almost as good. Notice, though, that I said almost. Adding just a few mushrooms really does make the dish noticeably more savory and rich. If you are a lover of mushrooms, one could easily substitute fresh for canned and even double the amount without any need to alter other parts of this recipe.

You may be wondering, why reduced sodium everything? It’s simple. Most of the foods used in this recipe are already loaded with sodium. Many people, which often includes my own family, already eat far more sodium than is recommended. Although using reduced-sodium is not the same as low sodium, substituting a few reduced-sodium items for the full-sodium varieties will significantly cut down on the amount that is consumed. Remember, however, that even by making all these substitutions, this is still not a low sodium recipe.

Although my family prefers to serve this over noodles, it goes just as well over mashed potatoes. And don’t forget to add a vegetable! Classic roasted or steamed carrots make a healthy, colorful addition to the dinner plate, although butternut squash or roasted Brussels sprouts go nicely, as well.
