Who doesn’t love a good burger? It has been a staple in American cuisine for longer than many of us have been alive! Go to nearly any cook-out and they will be there, sizzling over a grill. Such a simple and versatile food, it’s sure to please nearly any crowd. From a classic cheeseburger to the bacon BBQ burger to the breakfast burger, you can make this over and over again and have a different meal every time!

Why do I make my own burgers at home? It’s simple. When I make my own burgers, I know what goes into them. I can buy lean ground beef to reduce the fat content, as well as eliminate the salt to keep this a low-sodium recipe. There are no preservatives to worry about, and I don’t need to remember to unthaw anything ahead of time. In addition, buying my own ground beef and seasonings is often cheaper than buying pre-made burgers, and I can control the size of the burgers for portion control.

You may be asking, where’s the salt? As a dietitian, I rarely use salt in my recipes, and this is no exception. The natural taste of the meat, as well as the variety of delicious seasonings and toppings for my burger provide so many rich flavors, I wouldn’t want to mask them with salt! I also like to avoid the use of salt for the health of myself and my family.

While I usually make this easy burger seasoning recipe with 90/10 ground beef, many people prefer to use a higher fat meat, such as 80/20 or even 70/30. Why? A higher-fat content generally means the burger will be more flavorful and moist. However, it will add a significant amount of calories and fat to the meal, including saturated fat. But again, as with the salt, the rich taste of the beef and a wide variety of seasonings and toppings mean that there’s plenty of flavor in this recipe without the need for additional fat.

What sides go well with these burgers? Of course, there’s the obvious: french fries! But any side dish you prefer with your burgers works. My family often likes grilled asparagus or a fresh salad as our vegetable, and usually do some type of potato, like baked fries or these delicious roasted potatoes. Having a cookout? Keep the sides simple with a delicious potato salad and a fresh fruit salad.
